Dr Pharaoh Joseph Mavhunga is an accomplished educationist and academic who holds a PhD in Education, among other qualifications. Dr Mavhunga has broad experience in the education sector spanning over a four-decade period, having taught at all levels of the education system in Zimbabwe, starting as a Primary school teacher, Secondary School teacher, lecturer at both Primary and Secondary Teachers’ Colleges and eventually a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Dean of Education at the University of Zimbabwe. This wide teaching experience gives him a clear overview of the entire education system in Zimbabwe. During his service in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Dr Mavhunga held several positions of responsibility including serving as a School Head and Education Officer for Non-Formal Education, overseeing programmes in Study Groups and Part-time Continuing Education Centres (PTCECs) as well as ZABEC programmes for adult learners that were offered in Primary schools. Dr. Mavhunga then moved to the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education as a lecturer in Teachers Colleges for a period of eight years where he trained both Primary and Secondary school teachers. This was followed by twelve years of university teaching, first at Masvingo State University (now Great Zimbabwe University (GZU)) where he was one of the pioneers before moving to the University of Zimbabwe as a Senior Lecturer. Apart from teaching and research, Dr. Mavhunga held a number of administrative responsibilities which included serving as Acting Dean of Studies at Masvingo State University (now GZU), Chairman of the Department of Curriculum and Arts Education, before being promoted to the position of substantive Deputy Dean of Education at the University of Zimbabwe, a position which he held at the time of taking early retirement to join UNICEF as an Education Specialist. While serving in universities as an academic, Dr. Mavhunga became an accomplished researcher who has published widely in the field of Education and has presented several papers at conferences both nationally and internationally. In addition to his illustrious career in teaching, research and educational administration, Dr. Mavhunga had ten years’ experience working with UNICEF as an Education Specialist. Through this portfolio, he provided high level technical support to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in various areas of quality, equitable and inclusive education in Zimbabwe. Of note was his technical support to the Ministry when it conducted the first post-independencecomprehensive national curriculum review for the entire school system from 2014 to 2015, which yielded the first ever curriculum framework for Zimbabwe. Also relevant to this assignment, Dr Mavhunga supported MoPSE in the revision of syllabi and development of new ones for all subjects from Primary to Secondary school level, leading to further support in the implementation of the syllabi across the board. Dr. Mavhunga also has experience in consultancy both locally and internationally, having once participated in a SADC level project.
